@Dancinwithfate Try this... Create a layer for your drawing... create another layer for your shadow... but make sure the layer you're gonna use for drawing shadow is behind the layer of you're main drawing... the topmost layer would always be the drawing in front of the screen and the layer under it will be the drawing behind it. You can just drag the layers over or under another layer.

I have a question.... I am very new at using photoshop and painting digitaly in general, I use CS4 and a bamboo tablet, there is one thing i dont understand tho. I tried everything as he explaind it but when i do the different layers when I tgried to do the shadow on the surface, it messed up my sphere I click on all the layers and tried it on all and it still do the same.... this is probably a stupid simple question but i dont know the solution please help...

@Jennifurx I guess he did so because dodge and burn tools end up destroying the color information. its fine for minor touch ups but always better to go with original colors for painting

One question why didnt you use dodge and burn tool instead of black and white colors.

Great job! Thanks for the help. I kept trying to follow "regular" tutorials, but to no avail. Video tutorials are much better. I replicated this image quite easily, in very little time. Now I feel like I'm learning something. Two things I want to point out: 1. Whenever you said "opacity", you adjusted the flow setting. As best as I can tell, you left opacity at %100. 2. You used the airbrush setting, but I don't recall you mentioning that.
